A delicious read September 7, 2010 booklover92 The absolute perfect summer read, enjoyable throughout. Never runs out of twists, there's always a shocker round the corner like you wouldn't believe! A must-read, definitely!
Disappointing family saga September 6, 2010 K. Burton (Cotswolds) This book was my reading group's summer choice and I was really looking forward to it - it seemed the sort of story I love - a family mystery involving two sisters. However I was so disappointed - it was a very unbelievable story with many things that didn't quite 'add up' including the personalities of the characters. Things happened that just seemed too far fetched and I was not absorbed in the mystery as I'd hoped to be. I think the worst aspect was I didn't actually like any of the main characters, even 'baddies' usually have something likeable about them - these people seemed colourless and I just couldn't get to like them. The story is full of promise, with the sisters discovering evidence of a baby boy in their family's history who seems to have disappeared from the records - the quest to find out the truth is the main thrust of the story and the mystery is solved but to my mind not in a very satisfactory way.
So Disappointing September 6, 2010 Michael63 (Belfast, Northern Ireland) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book based on the excellent reviews it received on the TV Bookclub and Amazon. I have now given it up as a bad job and haven't finished it, I can find nothing interesting in the story, I can't relate to any of the characters and couldn't care less what happened to Henry or any of the rest of them for that matter. At times I even thought that perhaps I was reading a different book from all those people who gave it a glowing review. My biggest emotion is regret for the hardearned money I wasted on buying it.
Loved it September 2, 2010 Dolly daydream (Newcastle, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have just finished reading this book and have to say that I couldn't put it down. I bought it after seeing it reviewed on the TV book club then reading the first few pages on here and I was hooked. I usually tend to avoid novels that jump from one story to another with every chapter but becasue the stories were so closely linked, it completely worked and the story unravelled at a good, steady pace. I did guess the secrets before they were revealed but it didn't matter because I couldn't have guessed the details of the secrets, (if that makes sense) so it was still worth reading on to find out why these things happened.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone!
a little melodramatic September 2, 2010 A reader from (Kent) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book started well but I felt it lost impetus and in the end I found it rather an unsatifactory read. I struggled on several occasions to keep going. Several of the characters were rather stereotyped.
