| Customer Reviews: At least it was a good effort March 18, 2010 Lawrence G. S. Williams (Ontario) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There isn't much that can be said about this record. High On Fire's signature style of Motorhead worship with classic stoner metal vocals has made them one of the most acclaimed metal bands of the new millenium.
What you're getting with this record is just another batch of decent songs written in this style, with little variation or memorable moments. However, the opening track is worthy of 1 star on its own (without it, I'd have leaned more towards 1 or 2 stars), as it is possibly the best track High On Fire has ever written, full of amazing riffs that would leave the Iron Maiden boys jealous.
It's just a shame that, with the exception of parts of "Bastard Samurai", the album never really recaptures the uniqueness of the first track, choosing instead to blaze through mostly muddy riffs and monotonous song-writing.
I would also like to state that the production style used here does nothing to enhance the record's content. For the most part, it sounds like your speakers have been coated with a thick layer of mud, with many of the intricacies of the guitarwork being barely audible. For some reason, they decided to make the mix very vocal heavy, an unfortunate decision given the fact that vocalist Matt Pike really misfired on this record, in my personal opinion. The vocals don't sound as full or as intense as they did on previous efforts.
The bottom line is that, if you've worn out your copies of High On Fire's previous albums (the most recent 2 in particular) and are still craving more from these guys, this record will satisfy you easily. In general, the previous record "Death Is This Communion" provides a much stronger collection of memorable songs, and does not suffer from the production problems of "Snakes For The Divine".
RECOMMENDED FOR: fans of stoner metal bands like Sleep and Electric Wizard, fans of bands like Mastodon, Baroness, and Kylesa, fans of Motorhead
